Have you thought of volunteering to listen to children read in primary schools?
Schoolreaders is a charity that recruits volunteers to listen to children read in primary schools; this service is provided free to schools and they tell us that there is a need for volunteers in our local area.
They say that the scheme has “proved very successful, not least because all parties benefit including our volunteers who derive great pleasure from seeing what a difference a few hours of their time can make to a child’s reading ability and enjoyment. Improving literacy amongst primary school children is of great importance as currently 1 in 4 children are leaving primary school not reading to the expected standard. This has lifelong consequences.”
